Glengarry fire and light festival set f

- Maia Hart

A celebration of light and warmth is back for the sixth time.

Glengarry Fire and Light Midwinter Festival organiser Rebecca Amundsen said ‘‘it’s great to be able to have an event that the community can own themselves’’.

Amundsen said every year the aim was to switch things up a bit, while also continuing some of the traditions.

This year, people will get a chance to make glow-in-the-dark hacky sacks, and try their hand at flax-weaving of stars to celebrate Matariki.

A fire poi demonstration will be back, with children allowed to try an LED version for themselves. Amundsen said organisers hoped some SIT international students would help as volunteers, as a way of bringing the community together.

She said the aim was to keep the event barrier-free, with generous funding from the ILT Foundation, and entry to the festival would be free.

There will be some food for sale on the night, but Amundsen said families were welcome to bring a picnic.

‘‘I just really want to encourage people to come along.

‘‘The weather forecast looks good so it should be a great, fun night.’’

The festival will be held on Saturday at Eastside Baptist Church in Glengarry and will end with a parade of lanterns around the shopping centre.
