Nine hacks to make your house look warm this winter
The current cold snap has finally forced winter-deniers around the country to
face up to the cold reality that winter is well and truly here. To help you cope with the cool months ahead here is a list of nine life hacks to make your house look warm this winter.
1. WARM HUES
Styling your home using warm colours such as red, orange and yellow, creates a cosy, welcoming atmosphere. The stimulating nature of these warm colours may not do anything to heat your home but they will make your space appear warmer than before.
2. INVEST IN COZY DETAILS
A cozy rug or cushion can make a big difference on a wintry night. Embrace the fur decor trend by investing in a Mongolian fur cushion (or pick up an affordable faux fur variety). Still feeling cold? British furniture brand Timothy Oulton has released a Cabana Yeti Chair made of long-haired New Zealand sheepskin that is sure to keep you warm.
3. ROLL OUT THE DOOR SNAKES
Keeping a cold draught from slipping under the crack in your door doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. Door snakes are a basic but effective way to keep the heat from escaping your room as the temperatures drop.
4. LAYER IT UP
One of the easiest ways to create a warm and inviting space is by piling up the rugs, blankets and cushions on your furniture so you can make a cosy little nest.
5. LIGHT THE FIRE
A crackling fireplace is ideal for chasing off the winter blues as they lift the spirits along with the body temperature. For those who don’t have access to a fireplace, get your hands on a portable electric fireplace or, worst case scenario, change your phone’s screensaver to a picture of a fire in the hopes it tricks your body into feeling even a little bit toasty.
6. DO SOME BAKING (AND LEAVE THE OVEN DOOR OPEN AS IT COOLS)
Make your house feel and smell warm by baking your favourite winter treats. Leave the oven door open as it cools down to spread around the residual heat and the delicious smell of baking.
7. PUPPY POWER
Our furry friends can make any room look cosy. Break the rules about keeping your dog off the couch this winter and use your furry pet’s body warmth as an antidote to the pervasive chill.
8. LIGHT IT UP
Tealights, candles and lamps may not do much to heat your house but the cosy atmosphere they create will certainly make your home look warmer.
9. MEDITATE
If all else fails, get your mind off your chattering teeth by finding your inner zen and simply thinking warm.
