Pop-up cat cafe a purr-fect success

- Rebecca Moore

Success of SPCA Southland’s first pop-up cat cafe proves that Invercargill is ready for a cat cafe. Well, that is the opinion of SPCA Southland inspector Jenny MacDonald.

About 200 people attended the fundraiser event on Saturday, but for people who missed out, the cafe will also be open 9.30am to 3.30pm today at Cambridge Arcade.

Some cats were re-homed, coffees were enjoyed and money was raised at the fundraiser event, which was held as part the SPCA’s annual Cupcake Day appeal, MacDonald said.

It was better than expected, there was a steady flow of people.

‘‘The atmosphere was fantastic. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the cats did so well, they were tired towards the end, but it was really positive vibes.’’

The SPCA hoped to bring the pop-up cafe back for future fundraising events but its success was because of support from the community, MacDonald said. ‘‘It’s shown Invercargill is ready for something like this.’’

If it was to go ahead again they would need a bigger space and hopefully more cats, she said.

On Saturday there were five cats at the cafe – two of them found homes because of the event. There was also information on other animals at the SPCA for people to adopt.

‘‘It was a really good achievement and we’re pushing to get the other three homes soon.’’
