Recognition for local accountants
Two Southland accountants have received fellowships for outstanding service to their profession and community.
Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand president Jane Stanton was in Invercargill for the presentation to Peter Carnahan and Peter Heenan at Transport World last night.
Both men were honoured at the annual Southland chartered accountants awards’ evening.
‘‘These two members [Carnahan and Heenan] have demonstrated great commitment and dedication to their community, generously offering their skills to benefit local businesses and charities,’’ Stanton, of Sydney, said. ‘‘Fellowships are peer recognition awards, making them even more meaningful.’’
Some of their roles are: Carnahan: a director of Queenstown-based Trojan Holdings Limited and some subsidiaries, as well as being chief executive of their transport/waste companies Northern Southland Transport, Cromwell Transport and AllWaste. Chairman of Southfuels, Heenan: chairman of Southern Institute of Technology Council, executive director of finance for the HW Richardson Group Ltd, a trustee and treasurer of the Southland Hospice Charitable Trust and former member of Southland Regional Strategy Group’s new industry action team.
Southland membership milestones were recognised in another chartered accountants’ function yesterday. The eight longserving members highlighted were Bill Fieldes, 60 years; Cam McCulloch, 50 years; Murray Rankin, 40 years; Nicole Fleming, Trudy Heads, Tim Logan, Julie Loan and Bevan Pearce, 25 years.
Fieldes, 94, said he felt ‘‘humble’’ to receive a milestone membership certificate. ‘‘I was a late starter, I was 34 when I started [in accounting].’’
Throughout his career Fieldes was an office worker being employed as a clerk before accepting an accountant’s position at Farm Accounting Association in Gore in 1958. He resigned after 20 years to be an accountant at Southland Farmers Co-op in the town for 13 years.
Fieldes was brought up in Northland. He came to Southland because the Farm Accounting Association gave him the chance to begin his time as an accountant.
