International student furthering her studies at S.I.T.
Information Technology (I.T.) continues to prove indisipensable when it comes to the business world, and this isn’t likely to change any time soon.
Choosing a career in a consistently evolving industry was something Master of I.T. student Prabhjot Kaur Prabh was keen to pursue, having previously completed a degree in the subject.
‘‘After finishing my studies back in my country in India, I started working as a computer teacher in a school,’’ Prabhjot says.
She worked in this position for amost two years, but felt something was missing.
‘‘I realised that I needed some international qualifications to get a higher post.
‘‘As in my country, you are highly valued if you hold some international qualifications.’’
The decision to come to New Zealand to complete further studies in her chosen field was made, with Prabhjot enrolling in the Post Graduate Diploma of I.T., followed by the Masters of I.T. at the Southern Institute of Technology’s Invercargill campus.
She particularly enjoys the design side of I.T. ‘‘I love to design websites and sometimes I design flyers.
‘‘Currently, I am also doing a volunteer job at Number 10 SYOSS and I am designing a new website for them.’’
Prabhjot is hoping that once she has completed her qualification, she will gain her dream job as a web developer.
‘‘I am presently learning skills to become proficient in that,’’ she says.
‘‘My I.T. qualifications will help me in my career and to get work for a reputable company.’’
Information Technology has always fascinated Prabhjot as she says it contains a vast amount of knowledge about new technologies.
‘‘I always wanted to keep up with the current trends, and I.T is such a field that will help me in this.’’
Prabhjot completed her one year post graduate Diploma in I.T (Level 8) last year and is studying towards her Masters in I.T. (Level 9) this year.
She says the atmosphere at S.I.T is really good and she has found the tutors to be very friendly and helpful, guiding her in her studies.
‘‘The one other thing that I like the most at S.I.T is the 24-hour access to the computer labs, which help in providing a quiet environment for studies,’’ says Prabhjot.
‘‘I am able to come at any time to study.’’
‘‘I have learnt the business intelligence by which I can work in a business environment for incorporating technology into business to improve its productivity.
‘‘I have also learnt the skills to write the literature reviews which will help me in the future to pursue PhD.
‘‘Moreover, Web Application Development has provided me the skills to develop user-friendly web designs.
Prabhjot has recently been successful in gaining a paid internship at the Southland Medical Foundation, an opportunity she is very excited about.
After seeing an advertisement through her student email, Prabhjot applied.
‘‘When I saw the advertisement, all the
requirements were exactly fitting to me, so I applied for it.
I was called for the verbal interview that went really well and I got accepted.’’
Prabhjot is looking forward to the internship and the practical experience she will gain whilst completing it.
‘‘It will be a new challenging role for me and I will be working really hard to fulfill my job duties,’’ she says.
The internship is for 10 weeks.
Overall, Prabhjot is very happy she made the decision to come to New Zealand.
‘‘I am learning many new things, which will help me to fulfill my dreams.
‘‘I also thank my husband who has always stood by my side and was the one who encouraged me to come to New Zealand.’’
