New-season podcasts

- Katy Atkin

Spring brings more daylight hours, new outdoor activities and new listening sensations for your ears. September has become a bumper time for new podcast releases as it’s when the big production houses launch their premium content.

Here’s a few picks that will excite your ear buds and fill up your listening devices for getting out and about in the warmer weather.

Serial – Season 3 (This American Life)

Hit podcast Serial returned this month with its third series.

In seasons one and two, the Serial team focused on just one case: Adnan Syed in season one and Bowe Bergdahl in season two.

This time around, the podcast deals with the state of the entire American justice system.

Serial spent a year in the courtrooms of Cleveland, Ohio – ‘‘one courthouse, week by week’’ – with access to all sides, defendants, lawyers, family and friends. They also went inside the state’s prisons and were allowed to record inside judges’ chambers. Long time presenter Sarah Koenig returns and is joined by co-presenter, Emmanual Dzotsi.

Last Seen – WBUR and Boston Globe

This pod is a collaboration between the Boston Globe newspaper and Boston Public Radio. It looks at the 1990 robbery of the Isabella Gardner Museum in Boston, in which art worth millions of dollars was taken.

Thieves dressed as police officers tied up security guards and spent 81 minutes inside the museum, making off with $500 million in paintings, including works by Rembrandts and Degas.

The journalists were given unprecedented access to police case files and never-before-heard interviews. Episodes one and two are available now.

Happy Face – Stuff you should know

This chilling true crime podcast tells the story of the ‘‘Happy Face’’ serial killer Keith Hunter Jesperson, who killed eight women in the 1990s. The pod traces the history of these killings through the eyes of Jesperson’s daughter Melissa Moore, as she grapples with her father’s crimes and tries to lead a normal life.

The first episode is available now.

The Dream – Little Everywhere and Stitcher

What if I told you that listening to a podcast could change your life and net you hundreds of dollars?

Well, I’d be lying, but we’ve all seen online posts boasting incredible business opportunities. This podcast dives into the world of pyramid schemes, multi-level marketing, and all the other businesses that require members to recruit people in hopes of a commission.

The first two episodes are out now.

The Shadows – CBC Canada

Fiction podcast offerings are on the rise and the latest one from Canada’s CBC network, looks at finding love, staying in love and all the choices that come with it.

The podcast is centred around a young artist who believes in having one great love and will do anything to find and keep it.

Presenter Kaitlin Priest’s previous podcast work is full of emotional language and poignancy and The Shadows is set to be more of the same. All six episodes of the podcast are available now.

This time around, Serial deals with the state of the entire American justice system.
