Car enthusiasts enjoy classics

- Ben Bootsma

The temperature was low but spirits were high at the Riverton car show at the weekend, with more 200 cars at the annual event.

In its 10th year, this was the first time it had been dampened by the weather, show convener Grant Anderson said.

On display were many rare and classic cars from heavily modified hot rods to mint condition classics.

A 1958 Dodge being Anderson’s personal favourite car on the day.

The event was hosted by the Riviera Touring Car Club which raises money for the people in need in the Riverton community.

‘‘The idea for the event is that we give back to people in need. We save the money until we decide on someone then give them the donation.’’

The show did not attract as many people as previous years and Anderson put that solely down to the weather.

‘‘We missed the thousands of people coming through but it was still a really good day. It was far better than I thought it would be.’’

Anderson said the club, started about 12 years ago, was set up because there was a lack of car clubs around, even though there were many classic car owners in the community.

‘‘A couple of guys got together and said we should start a car club, because there were so many cars in Riverton but no club.’’

The club held a drive from Riverton to Gore on Sunday to celebrate its decade long existence.

The community’s growing involvement was something Anderson said had helped the show come together and develop in to the event it was today.

‘‘Many, many people and more locals got involved in the show. It’s just making the community a little bit more tight-knit.’’
