In response to your article (October 18) regarding Cr John Douglas’s comments, and being one of the silent majority of Manapouri residents, I would like to ask why he has suggested that Manapouri ratepayers help pay for a scheme that they will not be connected to.

Yes, Manapouri residents have been very vocal as it is fundamenta­lly wrong for a town to discharge semi treated sewage to another town. It is also wrong to consider pivot irrigation near an airport and close to our town.

Having read that the council has received a $5 million grant from the Tourism Infrastruc­ture Fund which is to support communitie­s that are responding to the increase in tourism numbers, how can we still have a $2.1 million shortfall?
