Making waves on runway

- Ben Bootsma

For one graduating fashion student, it’s all about the jacket.

Xiao Ping Jones [Sarah] says when it comes to men’s fashion, show-piece jackets is what it is all about.

‘‘The pants and shirts, they are just like accessories. It’s about the jackets for me.’’

Jones will be joined by other graduating and current Southern Institute of Technology Bachelor of Fashion students to showcase their works at the Phoenix Fashion Graduate Show at Centrestage Theatre tonight.

After being given a merit award at the Hokonui Fashion Design Awards this year, Jones has her eyes set on further honing her craft when she finishes her studies.

She said she specialised in men’s fashion, designing tailored jackets, pants, shirts and coats, because in most men’s fashion, ‘‘there’s really not much taste’’.

‘‘I prefer to do menswear, it’s my forte. I like traditional tailoring techniques. I just hope to keep on honing these skills.’’

Phoenix show project manager Monica Toretto said the event was about showing the community what they’ve achieved and how far she and fellow students had come.

‘‘It’s to really give the public, the community, a good show. It’s going to be quite the variety because we are all such different designers, and we’ve done a lot of different works.’’

On show would be works made for various shows throughout the year, including the Grease musical and Blackadder productions.

‘‘With the addition of the musical theatre stuff it will show that difference.’’

The showcase was entirely organised and run by the third year students ,and they invited first and second year fashion students to join them.

‘‘It’s to really give the public, the community, a good show. It’s going to be quite the variety because we are all such different designers, and we’ve done a lot of different works.’’
