Explosive shell unearthed

Four Bay of Plenty homes were evacuated and the New Zealand Defence Force bomb squad called after contractor­s unearthed a metrelong high-explosive naval shell. The contractor­s were carrying out demolition work at a Te Puke address when the live shell was found on Tuesday. Police were contacted, and officers called in the bomb squad from Auckland. Police evacuated four houses and the squad took the shell away for destructio­n.
