Sroubek review imminent
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern expects the outcome of an investigation into Karel Sroubek’s residency ‘‘very soon’’.
The convicted drug smuggler was briefed on the Immigration NZ investigation into his case and his response has been shared with Immigration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway.
Lees-Galloway was expected to make an announcement about the investigation later this week.
Whatever the outcome of the review, the saga is far from over and will likely be tied up in legalities for some time to come.
Lees-Galloway ordered the Immigration NZ probe after information came to light that directly contradicted what he used when granting the residency.
It has been revealed that the file he considered did not include documentation showing Sroubek returned to Europe; decisions relating to his bail applications; and a Parole Board report (made two days before his decision).
Sroubek’s file would have included details of his convictions that included the judge’s sentencing notes.
It would likely have also included Judge Roy Wade’s findings when Sroubek was found guilty of passport charges, when he told the judge that while living in the Czech Republic he witnessed a murder.
The fact Sroubek travelled home when indicating there was a threat against his life, questioned the credibility of his claim, and likely triggered the Immigration NZ probe.
