Bennett sacked by Broncos
Wayne Bennett has reportedly been sacked as Brisbane Broncos coach.
Bennett, who has won six NRL premierships at the Broncos, is said to have been let go with a year to run on his contract. The 68-year-old has signed with South Sydney for 2020 and 2021, but will now leave a year early.
His successor, Souths’
Anthony
Seibold, was set to be unveiled as
Broncos coach last Friday. But, in a sensational development, Bennett called his own Wayne Bennett press conference to say he would see out his contract and coach the Broncos in 2019.
Broncos powerbrokers have now acted, bringing an end to Bennett’s long association with the club. Bennett spent 25 years as Broncos coach, interrupted by a premiership-winning stint at St George Illawarra, then a less successful spell with Newcastle.
Seibold had previously broken his silence on the shambolic situation, having signed a four-year deal to replace Bennett. Once that move was announced, Souths sought to secure Bennett is a straight swap that will now start a year early.
‘‘I have had a gutful. I’ve been sitting here for four weeks and feeling like a punching bag. It’s not acceptable and it’s not fair,’’ Seibold said.
Seilbold is now expected to begin his Broncos’ tenure as soon as today.
