Exciting times for Frew
Netball great Wendy Frew has had an unforgettable year in her sport but her main focus now is the arrival of a new family member.
‘‘It’s very exciting,’’ she said. Frew and her husband, Trent, have Archie, 6, and Indie, 3, and the new baby is expected in June.
Soon after captaining Southern Steel to victory in the ANZ Premiership final in August, Frew and her family left Invercargill for a six-month stay in Rotorua. Trent, who is a firefighter, is training recruits in the Bay of Plenty.
On the work front, Frew is part of a Netball New Zealand advisory group appointed to sharpen the organisation’s high performance strategy and vision. A review of that high performance structure is under way following the Silver Ferns’ disappointing fourth at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast this year.
‘‘I’m enjoying the challenge and working with a great bunch of professional people,’’ Frew said.
She retired from top-level netball playing this year and is well qualified to advise, with 17 years’ experience in the national competition.
As well as the advisory role, Frew has set up a small clothing manufacturing business named Who Told Ya That.
‘‘I’ll see how it goes and have a bit of fun with it,’’ Frew said.
Southern Steel’s pre-season training has started and Frew misses not being in the team.
‘‘I’m always going to miss it . . . they’re a fabulous bunch of players.
‘‘They’ll do well without me and, hopefully, they’ll build on from the success of this year,’’ she said.
She hopes to take part in Steel training sessions when returning from Rotorua and will support the team from the sidelines.
‘‘Steel is a big part of my life.’’
