Flights canned over low clouds

- Thomas Manch

Low cloud disrupted Boxing Day flights at Wellington Airport.

A mass of moist air pushed into the capital after Christmas Day’s rain, cancelling flights and causing disruption for travellers.

The cloud was forecast to clear by the afternoon, but passengers were warned of roll-on delays.

Air New Zealand spokeswoman Hannah Searle said that while the situation had improved, passengers booked to fly for the remainder of the day needed to check the flight schedule.

‘‘Customers affected by weather disruption this morning are being re-accommodated on alternate services,’’ she said.

Wellington Airport spokesman Greg Thomas said there had been a reasonable number of cancellations and diversions due to the low cloud.

‘‘It’s just a matter of waiting for this mist to clear. Airlines are still operating but they’re expecting there to be disruptions throughout the day.’’

Thomas encouraged passengers to check their flights.

MetService’s Gerrit Keyser said a mass of ‘‘moist air’’ was sitting over Wellington.

‘‘Now we’re just at the back edge of it and we’re just getting moist air pushing in from the ocean. There is also always a knock-on effect. Flights that are delayed now will be delay flights in the afternoon, but we’re just weather forecasters, so we can’t forecast that.’’
