Germon to head Cricket NSW

-

Former New Zealand captain Lee Germon has been named as the new Cricket NSW chief executive.

After an ‘‘extensive’’ search, the NSW board turned to the man running Big Bash League franchise Sydney Thunder. Germon will take over from departing chief Andrew Jones, who is leaving at the end of the season after five years at the helm.

Germon, who has experience as a senior administrator in rugby and cricket, was at the helm at Canterbury when the club won five Plunket Shield competitions and another five women’s titles in New Zealand’s domestic system.

The former wicketkeeper-batsman captained New Zealand in all 12 tests he played and in 36 of his 37 one-day internationals, which includes the 1996 World Cup.

‘‘We conducted an extensive search which resulted in many strong candidates,’’ CNSW chairman John Knox said.

‘‘Lee stood out because of his extensive leadership experience at two elite cricket organisations, his experience in stakeholder management and building a culture of success on and off the field.

‘‘Cricket continues to change with the explosion of the Big Bash and a heavy investment in grass roots which will encourage more boys and girls to play the game.

‘‘At the same time Cricket NSW has a fundamental responsibility to continue producing some of the best players in the country.

‘‘Lee has made a strong impression during his time leading the Sydney Thunder and the Cricket NSW Board believes he has the credentials to take the game forward in NSW.’’

Germon takes over the reins at a time when the Blues are rebuilding their side.

"Although I have only been with Cricket NSW for one and a half years I am acutely aware of its proud history,’’ Germon said.
