Conservation Rare birds resettled
Four of New Zealand’s rarest birds have been released on Motutapu Island in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf, following a record-breaking breeding programme. The shore plover/ tuturuatu is critically endangered, with only about 250 left in the world. Pu¯ kaha National Wildlife Centre has been working with the Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust on a breeding programme. Lead ranger Mireille Hicks said that between the two groups, they had seven breeding pairs.
