Show a ‘great family time’
The southern A&P Show circuit is under way in the south. In this series we ask show presidents what they love about their event.
Jason Bennett is a long-time committee member of the Waiau A&P Association.
How long have you been part of the Royal Agricultural Society?
I was towed around as a youngster, and then I became heavily involved and have been for about 25 years now.
What is it about A&P shows that you love?
I love the tradition and have a real passion for showing top quality stock. Our family has been showing for more than 70 years, and it’s a great family time.
Describe your vision for the future of shows? What will be the big challenges?
Getting livestock back and trying to keep the next generation involved. Big challenges include retaining sponsorship and remaining current to keep the interest. Also, providing fun, enjoyable and educational entertainment for a great whole-family day.
What is the toughest part of your role?
Time and such. A small committee that are all volunteers filling the various roles required.
What do you enjoy most about it?
Watching our children enjoying, participating and collecting championships. It brings back many memories of my younger days and so much pride.
Why did you join?
It’s in my blood. It’s my passion, and in my upbringing and history.
What is your favourite memory of the shows?
The friendships, the laughs, the prizes, hotdogs, candy floss and side shows. I won a lot when I was younger and have now continued to watch our children win a few.
