The Southland Times

Moved by the sound of music

-

At Hospice Southland we often have the privilege experience moments of great joy thanks to the wonderful people we care for.

One such special moment happened recently as our very talented Office Manager Kathryn and Events Coordinator Suzanne were practicing a duet to be performed at a remembrance service to be held at Hospice Southland later that week.

During their practice one of our patients was walking around with her sister when they happened across the duo.

Drawn in by the music they enjoyed an impromptu concert by Kathryn and Suzanne.

Priscilla Blair was walking with her sister that day.

Her sister recollected that when Suzanne Prentice was 15 years old, she was still working in the local chemist all the while establishing herself as a prominent singer in New Zealand.

Priscilla, being a huge fan of Suzanne’s’, had her mum bring her into town from Bluff on the bus just to meet her.

Unfortunately, Priscilla being extremely shy – couldn’t bring herself to say hello.

Many years later, Priscilla happened across Suzanne here at Hospice Southland and not only had the pleasure of meeting and having her photo taken with Suzanne, but had the opportunity of her own private concert!

Suzanne reminisces meeting Priscilla:

‘‘It was lovely meeting Priscilla and humbling to know that she has been a fan of mine for so many years.

‘‘It’s not often I am in a place that enables me to give back in such a personal way and knowing that I essentially fulfilled a childhood dream fills my heart.’’

In her last days with us Priscilla graced us with her beautiful smile and busied herself with weaving a Korowai, just proving how precious ‘‘living every moment’’ is. Suzanne Prentice (left) fulfilled a life-long dream of Priscilla Blair’s, to meet her in person. PHOTO: SUPPLIED
