Fleming for England?

-

New Zealand’s Stephen Fleming is being talked up as a potential coach of the England team.

The contract of England coach Trevor Bayliss ends after this year’s Ashes series in September and his assistant, Paul Farbrace, has just finished up after the tour of the West Indies to join Warwickshire.

There are suggestions England could look to split up the coaching roles between the three formats with Fleming proving his worth in the white ball domain.

England ODI and T20 player Sam Billings labelled Fleming, one of New Zealand’s most astute captains, as the ‘‘best coach’’ he has worked with and would vouch for him to be involved with the England setup.

Billings played for Fleming in the IPL with Chennai Super Kings and the T10 League in the UAE.

‘‘I don’t want this to be rude to anyone else, but he’s the best coach I’ve ever worked with,’’ Billings said.

‘‘He’s a great bloke – straighttalking. He’ll be saying something to you, you know he’s having a go at you, but you don’t take it personally. He makes you think about things objectively, but in a way that it motivates you to do something about it.

‘‘It’s amazing how quickly he gels a team together – and is very conscious of the group as a whole, but getting the best out of individuals. I learned a huge amount off him in the IPL last year, and in the T10 where I captained and he coached as well.’’

Fleming has just announced he is stepping down as coach of the Melbourne Stars after guiding the franchise to two finals in four years in the Australian Big Bash T20 league.
