The missing and hurt
Of the 47 people on Whakaari/ White Island at the time of the eruption on Monday afternoon, at least five have died, many are injured, some critically, and eight are missing, feared dead.
The Red Cross Family Links website listed the numerous people who were feared missing.
Created by members of the public, the list is not an official list of the missing. The current names on the list were registered by loved ones following news of the natural disaster.
The New Zealand Red Cross encourages people with relevant information to update the list.
Here are some of the victims, people injured and those still unaccounted for.
DEAD: Hayden MarshallInman
Whakata¯ne man and tour guide Hayden Marshall-Inman was killed by the eruption. He was the first of five confirmed deaths. Former mayor Tony Bonne said he knew Marshall-Inman and his family personally: ‘‘It’s very sad that he’s lost his life.’’ His body was believed to still be on the island. His brother said the family has had no communication with authorities to discuss his recovery. ‘‘Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone, but we just want them back . . . off the island,’’ he said, wishing to remain anonymous.
MISSING: Tipene Maangi
The 23-year-old tour guide was among those missing on the island. He had been working for White Island Tours for only a few months, but a family member said he loved his job. His wha¯nau held a vigil at Whakata¯ne wharf yesterday morning. They then gathered at Te Ma¯nuka Tu¯tahi Marae to say karakia and were ‘‘holding out hope’’.
MISSING: The Langford family
A family of four from Australia was among those still unaccounted for. Anthony Langford, 51, his wife Kristine, and their two teenage children, Jesse, 19, and Winona, 17, were marked as missing. They are believed to be from North Sydney in New South Wales, Australia.
INJURED: Newlyweds Lauren and Matt Urey
Lauren and Matt Urey, from the
United States, were on their honeymoon in New Zealand at the time. They were travelling on the Royal Caribbean cruise ship that had docked in Tauranga prior to venturing out on a day tour to the island. The couple were rescued from the island and rushed to hospital with severe burns, according to Lauren’s mother Barbara Barham. There had been no update on their condition.
INJURED: Jason Griffiths
Jason Griffiths, a 33-year-old from Coffs Harbour in New South Wales, Australia, was rescued from the island on Monday. His family confirmed he was among the injured and was currently seriously ill in hospital.
MISSING: Zoe Hosking, Lisa Dallow and Gavin Dallow
Fifteen-year-old Zoe Hosking from Adelaide, South Australia, was among those missing along with her mum, Lisa Dallow, and her mum’s partner, Gavin Dallow, a lawyer. Zoe’s school, St Aloysius College (SAC), released a statement saying she and her family were missing on the island.
‘‘Information is scant at this time but SAC is now seeking to provide preliminary advice to the school community,’’ the statement read.
MISSING: Karla Mathews
Australian Karla Mathews was still unaccounted for. She was believed to be travelling with Jason Griffiths and Richard Elzer.

Richard Elzer, from Coffs Harbour in New South Wales, was listed as missing on the Family Links website.
