New toilet block open for business at Field Days

-

The new toilet block at the Southern Field Days is open for business.

The toilet block, which cost about $500,000 to build, was officially opened by Southern Field Days chairman Warren Ross and Community Trust South general manager Jackie Flutey at Waimumu in midDecember.

Ross said the toilet block had been ‘on the cards’ for quite a while as consent had been granted when the events centre was built in 2014.

However, after the events centre was built six years ago the office building received a major upgrade.

‘‘It has taken us three field days to get the toilets up and running.

‘‘It was a big job, but it has come together nicely,’’ Ross said.

The toilet block, which contains 12 female and six male toilets as well as two disabled toilets, would also be used by other groups which held events at the site.

Ross said the Field Days committee appreciated the cash injection of $100,000 by Community Trust Southland.

‘‘They (Community Trust Southland) have been great supporters of the field days.’’

The field days committee had previously hired about 90 port-a-loos for the three-day event, which attracts more than 40,000 people.

While fewer port-a-loos were required this year, the committee would still hire about 60 portable toilets which would be distributed around the venue.

Flutey said everyone should be proud of what had been achieved with the new toilet block.

‘‘It’s not one of the most glamourous projects we’ve been involved with, but it will make a huge difference to the way the event is run,’’ Flutey said.
