Crashes claim two lives

Two people have died within 24-hours of each other in separate incidents this week.

One person died in a workplace incident, while an elderly woman died as the result of a crash.

WorkSafe confirmed one person had died in an incident involving a tractor in Glenham, near Wyndham, yesterday.

A spokeswoma­n said WorkSafe had been notified of the incident about 11am.

Another person who was also injured in the incident and had been transferre­d to hospital, she said.

WorkSafe was making initial inquiries to establish the next steps.

A police spokeswoma­n said they were alerted to a tractor crash and the Serious Crash Unit had attended the scene.

On Sunday, an 86-year-old woman died in hospital after being involved in a serious car crash in Invercargi­ll last week.

The three-vehicle crash occurred at the intersecti­on of Morton and Centre streets about 3.50pm on Wednesday.

The police investigat­ion into the circumstan­ces of the crash are continuing.

On Wednesday, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said one person was trapped and needed to be cut from a vehicle.

A St John spokeswoma­n said one person was taken to Southland Hospital in a critical condition.

Initial reports were that the crash had involved two cars, a red Toyota Echo and a dark green Nissan Maxima.

Police have now confirmed there were three cars involved.

On Friday, police released a statement saying they were seeking witnesses of the crash.
