Inquiry into cash van raid remains open
Police are still investigating the armed robbery of an ACM cash transit van outside an Invercargill bank in 2018.
At 9.13am on November 21 that year three men, believed to be armed with firearms and possibly a Taser, held up an armoured transit van outside ANZ Bank branch on Kelvin St.
A stolen Subaru used in the robbery was then abandoned on Leven St.
A police spokesperson said the case was still active and police were following up on leads as and when they turned up.
Many people had been interviewed, primarily as victims, witnesses and people of interest, the spokesperson said.
‘‘Details of those interviews, search warrants executed, and statements compiled are withheld as the case remains open.’’
Inquiries had extended outside Southland.
The spokesperson was unable to give details on the amount of money stolen and other associated inquiries remained confidential.
‘‘Release of specific information in this case would likely prejudice the maintenance of the law and the right to a fair trial.’’
In the days after the robbery, police said they were interested in anyone with information relating to the distinctive overalls, gloves and footwear worn by the offenders.
At the time, police would not comment on how much money was taken, other than saying it was a ‘‘substantial amount’’.
‘‘Police are seeking information on anyone with large amounts of cash in various denominations including $100 bills, or anyone who behaved suspiciously before or after the incident.’’
One guard suffered minor injuries. Anyone with information should contact Invercargill police on (03) 2110400 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
