Jordan Luck to play with first band in October

- KOREN ALLPRESS

The tickets are at the printers and will soon be on sale for Basement’s reunion concerts.

Basement was The Exponent’s singer Jordan Luck’s first band and he will return to South Canterbury (alongside Exponents band member Brian Jones) to play in Timaru, Temuka and Geraldine in October.

Geraldine resident Steve Jones (no relation to Brian) set the wheels in motion for the reunion.

Basement originally consisted of Luck, Miles Richardson, Gary Bruce and Michael Jones, who were all in the fifth form in 1976 at Geraldine High School. In 1981, Steve Jones joined the band as a guitarist. When Bruce left he was replaced by Brian Jones, from Timaru.

Steve Jones said when the band takes the stage it will be ‘‘a bit of rock and roll history’’.

He said Basement played all over South Canterbury ‘‘in hotels and things’’ in the early 1980s.

Basement had five original songs and a range of new wave covers which came out in the late 70s and early 80s. He said they hoped to play them all.

‘‘We will chuck in for good measure a couple of Kiwi classics which will include some Exponents songs.’’

Jones said it will be Basement’s first reunion gig since it disbanded in 1982.

‘‘At the time Luck asked each member of the band if they wanted to go professional and everyone but Brian declined – for their own personal reasons.

‘‘Brian and Jordan moved to Christchurch, formed The Exponents and the rest is New Zealand music history.’’

Jones said band members had kept in touch and had been talking about a reunion gig for about 13 years.

‘‘Everyone’s very excited, really looking forward to it, it’s going to be a blast.’’

Everyone except Richardson would be playing. A session bassist will join them and a back up drummer will be on standby as Jones hadn’t played drums in 30 years, but had a kit and had been practis- ing, Jones said. They all had copies of the bands’ old recordings of the songs they used to play and were busy rehearsing.

‘‘Each musician will be up to speed ... they’ll be worth watching.’’

Jones was expecting sales to be popular.

‘‘Basement, even though it was just a pub band it was a phenom- tickets enon, everywhere we went had huge crowds and of course Jordan going to be what he went on to.’’

Two practice gigs would be held at the Crown Hotel in Geraldine on Tuesday October 18 and Wednesday 19. Jones said there would be a cost on the door for them.

The band ticketed gigs would then at the Sail play and Anchor in Timaru on Thursday October 20, at the Empire Hotel in Temuka on Friday October 21, and then at the Village Inn in Geraldine on Saturday October 22 and Sunday October 23.

Jones said tickets were being printed and should be available for $25 by the end of August from Port FM, Movie Max and the venues hosting the gigs.
