Harlequins make most of chances

- BRAYDEN LINDSAY

Harlequins remain a chance of making the top four.

A strong 44-32 win over Pareora has them on nine points and in striking distance of the four, with two rounds to play.

The 2015 South Canterbury premier netball champions had recorded just one win in the second round prior to last night, a six goal triumph over Craighead Diocesan back in week one of the second round.

They came within four of Old Boys, but were completely blown off the court by Roncalli in their last match before the three-week break. Harlequins were slow out of the starting blocks. Pareora won the opening quarter seven goals to four, with Jess Hewitson making a promising start in the goal attack bib.

Harlequins decided to start the competition’s most prolific shooter Pip Oliver from the bench.

When introduced to the match in the second quarter for Sarah Stark, Oliver made an instant impact, quickly wiping away the three-goal lead Pareroa had and putting the colours in front.

Harlequins attack found its mojo when Oliver came on.

They were able to find each other with more space across the court and set their shooters up better.

The defensive end of Kelly Waud and Sasha Wightman caused some trouble for the Pareora shooters.

Fourteen second half goals saw Harlequins take an 18-12 advantage into halftime.

Pleasant Point sneaked home against Timaru Girls’ High School winning 34-25, with Tash Boa and Jess Golding having strong matches, while Lucy Stephens was exceptional for Girls’ High.

Mackenzie showed too much class in their encounter against Roncalli winning 29-20.

A three-goal run to begin the match set the tone for the competition leaders, who stretched their unbeaten record to 12 games. It was just eight-six at quarter time. Eight successive Mackenzie goals saw the lead jump to 10.

Roncalli scored six consecutive goals in the third quarter.

Meanwhile, the clash between Old Craighead Diocesan will take place tonight. Boys and
