Sumner stand
The home of Canterbury football will pay former All Whites legend Steve Sumner the ultimate honour on Saturday. Mainland Football will recognise Sumner’s lifelong contribution to the sport by naming the grandstand at English Park after him. Sumner, 61, has endured a challenging time over the past year after being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer last September and given a 30 per cent chance of survival. Christchurch’s Sumner captained the All Whites at the 1982 World Cup finals and played 105 times for New Zealand from 1976 to 1988.
