A plan, please, to address CBD divide

-

The perennial problem has always been heavy traffic access to and from PrimePort Timaru from all directions.

Trucks have to be driven through long residential and small business areas and down the Loop Road or via Heaton St.

This is only getting more difficult as time goes by.

Meanwhile Caroline Bay continues to silt up, reducing the water area.

The TDC Town Centre Report concludes ‘‘Without the utilisation of an alternative primary port connection route, the Bay Hill area and associated Piazza will struggle to be seen as part of the Stafford Street retail precinct.’’

A vehicle causeway across the Bay, providing easy road access to and from the port, would solve the majority of problems the town has faced for decades and will continue to grapple with if another route through built-up areas is proposed. That could not be further from the truth, as 85 per cent of Muslims of the world are unaffected by his policy order as all he wants is safe borders where the US can minimise the risks to its citizens, not unreasonable in my view given the huge problems in Europe.

About time you started watching Fox News and get a more balanced story before attacking Trump. Strong immigration policies and strong defence forces are needed since an Obama reign has created such world turmoil with his weak policies to keep the evils of society at bay. Roger Small

Waimate Thanks for your letter, Roger. The editorial stemmed from Donald Trump apparently referencing a non-existent incident in Sweden, before he explained he was referring to claims made on a Fox News

The flawed Evans St development, which could only make things worse, would, hopefully, be put to bed permanently, saving huge expense and awful disruption to so many people and businesses.

Several benefits would be achieved in one, final, project, including the saving of Caroline Bay, which would continue to be a safe swimming area within an enclosed lagoon-style marina.

The cost, of course, would be enormous.

However, as you travel around the world one frequently comes programme about immigration and crime in Sweden. Reuters has since reported the average crime rate in Sweden has dropped since 2005. This in the same week Trump made public claims at a press conference based on demonstrably wrong information. Your suggestion of Fox News, where Trump chooses to get his information, rather than from his intelligence briefings, as a source for a ‘‘more balanced story’’ is an interesting one. – Grant Shimmin, News Director. across attractive seaside villages with safe harbours protected by causeways or breakwaters. How did they pay for it, you think? Indeed, however did our forebears finance Timaru’s land reclamation and breakwater projects? A user toll system seems to me to be the answer and would, surely, be welcomed when set against other, more disruptive alternatives.

Could someone, please, submit a workable plan and fix the problem forever. Thank you. Stephen Newman

Timaru then it’s necessary to heat it in the microwave to remove the wrinkles. I like Pic of the Day and Letters to the Editor because it’s locals supporting their newspaper.

I will admit I am a Facebook fan and find it easy to make instant comment. It’s all yours, unedited, warts and all and I have never struck anybody complaining about spelling or grammar mistakes.

Stephen suggests there is plenty to write about, like voluntary euthanasia and desalination, but there are good subjects closer to home, like cruise ship visits to Timaru and the central business district divide (February 20). Will the Hydro Grand development ever get the green light to start?

Editor Sarah Jarvis responded to Stephen Newman’s letter by saying lack of Letters to the Editor is not unique to The Timaru Herald. I believe the Otago Daily Times is possibly an exception.
