Gibbs, Trolove make early Cup impression

- STU PIDDINGTON

Roncalli College’s Jack Gibbs and Craighead’s Phoebe Trolove are setting the early pace at the opening day of Maadi Cup secondary schools rowing regatta at Lake Karapiro.

Gibbs put in the fastest time across eight heats in the under 17 single.

He was over four seconds quicker than anyone else over the 2000m course to cruise into the quarter-finals.

Trolove proved she will also be a real contender for the title in the under 17 single.

She was the quickest across the seven heats, with a 10 second advantage of the next best winner, to cruise into the quarter finals.

Trolove won the South Island title in a time quicker than the North Island winner, although water conditions mean that it is not always an accurate comparison.

Gibbs and Sam Anderson also won their under 17 double heat, but will have more work to do with seven crews quicker than them across the five heats.

Roncalli’s Anna Gregan also impressed coming second in her under 17 single to easily progress.

In a good day for Roncalli on the water Oksana Volkov, Neve McDougall, Charlotte Grant, Sophie Lyons and cox Brittney McDowell finished second in their under 15 coxed quad heat to progress.

Grant and McDowell also progressed to the under 16 quarter final with Ruby Young, Mya Nevin and Charlotte O’Brien after they also finished second.

Several other Craighead crews also showed they could be among the medals on Friday and Saturday.

Sarah Templeton and Eloise Gawler progressed comfortably in both the under 18 double and coxless pair, placing second in both heats.

Craighead’s under 18 novice eight also finished second in their heat

Meghan Templeton and Emma Jarvie were also impressive in winning their under 15 double.

They were second quickest across the seven heats, just a second back on the St Peter’s School crew, which have Lake Karapiro in their backyard.

For Timaru Boys’ High School their under 18 novice double of Liam Parker and Harry Bampton showed they will be medal contenders in taking out their heat.

The under 15 double of Josh Wilson and Hayden Kennedy also cruised through finishing second in their heat.

Brad Cvitanich also went through to the quarters after finishing second in his under 18 single.

Timaru Girls’ High School’s under 18 novice double of Emily Black and Blaize Lawrence also went across the finish line second to progress.

Several other crews from each of Timaru schools also went through to quarter finals, with the top four boats in each heat progressing.

A number of other heats are still to be raced on Tuesday.
