Harlequins and Old Boys impress

- BRAYDEN LINDSAY

Harlequins made a strong start to the South Canterbury premier netball competition with a 50-16 win over Timaru Girls’ High School.

Pip Oliver was in imperious form under the hooping nailing 34 goals from 42 attempts, in the three quarters she was on court.

Both sides had early misses but then it was one way traffic as Harlequins netted the opening six goals of the match.

They scored 14 goals apiece in the opening two quarters, before ringing the changes at halftime.

Chloe Austin looks to be an impressive pick-up for Harlequins at goal attack, showing she can shoot from long range but is also a pocket rocket around the court.

Girls’ High refused to give up and played some quality netball, with Cheynese King and Ella Broomhall leading the way.

Courtney Harper, Austin, Kaylee Dawson and Oliver were impressive for Harlequins.

Old Boys, sporting a new whiteand-blue strip, were outstanding winning 49-16 against Geraldine High School..

The defending champions scored 11 first quarter goals, before upping the intensity in the second.

Goal shoot Cecelia Wacokecoke looks to be a superb acquisition, showing great composure under the hoop and nailing a number of difficult attempts.

Alice Sutherland and Sophie Wills controlled things well through the middle of the court for Old Boys.

Maisie Fisher and Tianna Curtis starring for Gerladine.

Mackenzie, down on firepower for their opening round clash, sneaked past a spirited Pareora side 31-29. Stacey Grant, and Rachael Callaghan stood out, while Codi Lilley and Abby McIlroy showed they will be valuable additions to the country side.

Pareora were well led by Jess Hewitson with Katelyn Millar, Erica Phillips, Hollie McLaughlin and Nicole McNicol showing promise.

It was an even encounter with Pareora indicating they could throw a few surprises this season.

Meanwhile, Pleasant Point outclassed Craighead Diocesan with a 37-15 victory. Their midcourt of Kim Andrews, Tash Boa and Ellen Davey took control, while Genae Manson and Bridget Tiffen shot superbly under constant pressure from Steph Lysaght.

Taylah Marr and Annabelle Gualter showed touches of class for Craighead.
