Show a boost for casts’ self esteem
A show set to offer ‘‘a wee glimpse’’ into the lives of IDEA Services clients has boosted the confidence and self esteem of its cast, those involved say.
A cast of 21 have been working on the show, Dream Play, since February. Dream Play has been scripted and developed by IDEA Services clients.
The Timaru branch of the agency, which provides support for people with an intellectual disability, had been running a drama group for a number years, IDEA Services support for managers Linda Simpson said.
The service was granted funding through the Creative Communities scheme from the Timaru District Council, which allowed it to engage a tutor, Simpson said.
Aidan Theatre director Kimble Henderson had been running weekly workshops since February, Simpson said.
‘‘It’s going really fabulously, the cast have put the show together using their ideas, they’ve worked out their own moves, own script,’’ Simpson said.
The cast ranged in age from early 20s through to late 60s, and had a range of different abilities, she said.
‘‘It’s great for them to be able to express themselves creatively and participate in a group setting that ends up that they’re going to put on a performance.’’
The process had increased some of the cast members’ confi- dence, self esteem, skills, Simpson said.
Henderson said working with the cast had been great. ‘‘They’ve created this, this is just a wee glimpse into their lives. And it’s always interesting looking into people’s lives.’’
She hoped the audience would pick up on the ‘‘joy and mischievousness’’ the actors brought to the show.
Dream Play will be staged at the Aidan Theatre from 7pm on Saturday, May 27. and social
