Wet weather forces cancellations
The weather gods seem to have something against West End and Thistle’s senior A men’s football teams.
For the second time this season, wet weather has meant the highlyanticipated clash has been called off, due to torrential rain and the Timaru District Council closing the sporting grounds in Timaru.
Their week two clash on April 8 was abandoned due to bad weather, while they’ve played one league match which won 5-3 by West End.
Thistle coach Mark Offen said it was disappointing they wouldn’t get the chance to face West End.
‘‘The guys were really looking forward to it but you can’t control the weather.
‘‘We always enjoy playing West End. They play good football and the clubs get on really well.’’
Offen is unsure when the clash would now be played.
‘‘It could be later in the season where we might have to play games Saturday and Sunday and that could play a part in deciding the league.’’
He said the only frustrating thing was they would likely go into next weekend’s match against Hearts without any football over the last fortnight.
The South Canterbury Rugby Football Union have also cancelled all scheduled matches except for the senior sudden-death semifinal between Harlequins and Mackenzie, which has been transferred to Morrison Park.
Timaru Boys’ High School First XV are also still set down to play against Lincoln Combined at Pareora at midday, while Roncalli College are travelling to Rangiora.
The Canterbury Rugby Football Union will make a final decision regarding UC Championship games at 8am on Saturday morning after consulting with home schools.
That could see scheduled games delayed by 24 hours and played on Sunday afternoon or at a later date.
Hockey South Canterbury games remain on but they will be making a final decision at 9.30am on Saturday morning, which will be posted on their Facebook page.
Netball South Canterbury won’t be forced to re-schedule any matches, with no round organised due to the school holidays.
Golf courses in Timaru are also closed due to the rain.
