Going smokefree at the bay? No way.

-

I have been going to the Caroline Bay Carnival for the entire 40 years of my life and for 25 of those years I have been a smoker.

I do not understand the logic in trying to ban smoking in an outside area I take my kids to the carnival every year and I spend a lot of time at the bay during the year.

I am not going to have my kids miss out because of some ridiculous idea someone has about second hand smoke when you are outside in the open air.

I am courteous when I smoke and I make every effort if I am sitting near someone to move away if I have a smoke.

I am a ratepayer, I essentially pay towards the councilors wages and the council land is owned by the rate payers of Timaru so what gives them the right to tell me I can’t smoke outside in the open air.

I am told I cannot smoke at the bay but then you say there will be an area for bay workers to smoke in that’s a bit hypocritical.

I will not be told I cannot smoke in an area where it does not affect to replace a perfectly good burner, and we clean up the air, a win, win situation

I find that when there are problems Mr Scott you should listen better than you have done to date and be a bit more proactive in seeking local solutions instead of just doing as the [people] at ECan say. Jeremy Talbot

Temuka anyone else as far as I am concerned this decision is a joke, it is not going to be a bylaw and even if it was as long as I am a smoker I will good as the day they were put in, some pressed steel heaters are OK, others I have seen should be thrown out. As I see it a WOF is what is required.

I feel sorry for the pensioners in older homes who have heaters with hot water connections as that is a double whammy on their pocket books as they rely on heat from their fire and hot water for showers etc.

I recently renovated a cast iron heater for a friend (named below) his unit is now in A1 condition and will give good service for years to come, but sadly at the moment will only have another to go.

These heaters can be brought up to ECan standards with a bit of welding to the air supply, the units on sale now burn more fuel and are not meant to simmer over night. Greg Tulley, Joh Rodgers

Timaru continue to smoke when I visit Caroline Bay. Timaru
