This week has seen the centenary of New Zealand’s costliest day as a country in terms of loss of life, October 12, 1917. That’s remembered on Page 14 today, and will be officially commemorated at 2pm tomorrow, when an interpretative panel marking 100 years since the Battle of Passchendaele is unveiled in Timaru’s Botanic Gardens, near the Cenotaph.
