Caroline Bay motocross racing attracts hundreds

- AL WILLIAMS

Motorcyclists indulged themselves with a day in the sand at Timaru’s Caroline Bay on Saturday in what the organiser described as a unique event.

About 100 riders across multiple classes took part in the annual South Canterbury Motorcycle Club motocross beach club day.

South Canterbury Motorcycle Club president Andrew Richardt said the number of competitors, who ranged in age from five-yearsold through to 65, had been about on par since the event was reintroduced in 2015.

After being held on an almost annual basis from 1996 to 2002, members of the club had the event revitalised in 2015.

Throughout the day there were hundreds of spectators, he said.

‘‘The fact we are allowed on Caroline Bay is unique.

‘‘Not may towns or cities allow motorcycles on their bays and beaches anymore. ‘‘It’s just something different.’’ Riding on sand was a ‘‘very different’’ experience for the motorcyclists, he said.

‘‘It was an awesome day with perfect weather for it.’’

Riders managed to get three races across the numerous classes, he said.

While a competitive event, Richardt said it was also all about having fun, hence why ‘‘a sense of humour is compulsory.’’

‘‘Once the adrenalin kicks in it’s all go but at the end of the day we’re all there for the fun.

‘‘The beach is somewhere different to ride and we’re very lucky that the council let us do it.’’

Classes competing included mini-motocross, junior, senior and veterans.
