Choice for one should be choice for all

-

In response to the letter on cycle helmets on Wednesday, April 18, it always makes me laugh when people come out very strongly about a particular subject, like the letter about choice in the wearing of cycle helmets by Roy Hilton.

I agree with Roy, why do laws have to be made for the idiots that need protecting from themselves?

But alas, the laws are made for those few who need our protection as they can’t protect themselves.

Roy, you mention the word ‘‘choice’’ (the act of choosing) so your choice not to wear a helmet when visiting the store in Pleasant Point sounds fair.

However what of my ‘‘choice’’ if you get knocked off your cycle and get injured?

Can I have the choice like other people to say we don’t pay for your injuries?

I personally believe that people’s choice should go a lot further, like not having to wear a seatbelt, or not having to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle (it’s great having the wind blowing through your hair).

However if that’s my choice then other people should also have the choice of not having to pay if I am injured while exercising my choice.

That’s the nice thing about having a choice.

If you get to choose then I want the world doesn’t care?

Hell, we are tiny little islands in the bottom of the world.

What we do means stuff-all in the big picture.

No-one wants to wreck the place but surely not to use what we have carefully is just nuts.

Didn’t the PM come to power saying that she would bring people out of poverty and help the poor? Well, we need money and jobs. So let’s use the oil and gas, let’s use it to make this country a leader.

Only a fool starves on the streets while he has money in his pocket.

And to all the New Zealand First voters who have got this bunch into power, I hope you are happy. Ross F Brown Waimate to choose as well, or that’s not fair. Timaru
