South’Fest a chance to show off Port Loop area
An inaugural South Canterbury festival will bring a taste of southern pride to Timaru’s Port Loop.
South’Fest will be held on Saturday with the aim of celebrating the region, its spokesman says.
Solomon Tor-Kilsen said he, and a small committee, have organised the festival as a chance to show off what residents have to offer. A portion of funds raised through stall holders will go to Timaru Air Cadets (15 Squadron).
‘‘Essentially we arranged South’Fest to celebrate a bit of southern pride, as South Cantabrians and South Islanders. We want to have a bit of fun with that,’’ Tor-Kilsen said.
‘‘We wanted to have an event that allowed those in the community to show off who they are, what they can do and what they have to offer through art, music, food and market stalls.’’
Tor-Kilsen said as it is the festival’s first time, the committee expects it to start off slowly. Up to 15 stalls are expected to be open at the festival.
‘‘Being the first time we’ve done this event, we’re not expecting anything huge as far as turn out goes,’’ he said.
‘‘However, we have been blown away by the amount of support we have received from people for the concept.’’
Tor-Kilsen said it is planned for it to be an annual event, at the least.
‘‘There has been discussions on maybe having it more regularly than that as there is a healthy level of demand for more regular markets in the region.’’
