Delays predicted as improvements start

- MARK QUINLIVAN

The revamp of an increasingly busy State Highway 1 intersection near a central Timaru business complex will start on Monday to stave off safety concerns.

The Theodosia St (SH1)/Elizabeth St intersection near The Landings complex is set for a raft of improvements as traffic and pedestrian movements have intensified in the area.

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) said the work will cost $115,000, with $15,000 being contributed by the Timaru District Council (TDC). The work is estimated to take up to six weeks weeks complete, and the transport agency advises motorists to expect delays.

NZTA maintenance contract manager John Keenan said new line markings and alterations to the traffic islands are aimed at improving the merge distance area on Theodosia St, south of the Sophia St traffic signals, and improving the right turning bay into Elizabeth St.

‘‘Having consulted with key community stakeholders and nearby businesses most affected by this intersection, there was almost unanimous support for changing the traffic movements and reconfiguring the new pedestrian refuges to increase safety.

‘‘As part of these improvements, the right turn out of Elizabeth St onto Theodosia St will be closed and the exit onto Theodosia St will be left turn only.’’

South Canterbury Automobile Association district chairman Roger Carter said the intersection needed to change.

The AA had supported the intersection change since it was proposed in January.

‘‘My office is right opposite it and since The Landing was built it’s caused a number of problems.

‘‘I think generally something needed to happen.

‘‘I think the lane needed to be widened into Elizabeth St so I’m glad that’s happening.

‘‘At least it will be a lot better than what’s there now.’’

Carter, who also runs his property valuation business in Elizabeth St, said he heard car horns sounding at the intersection several times a day.

TDC communications manager Stephen Doran said council supports the work, and agrees it will improve safety.
