Lill stars as SC wins Hawke Cup opener

Allrounder Phil Lill had a memorable match as South Canterbury scored a first innings win over North Otago in a Hawke Cup cricket eliminatio­n match at the weekend.

Lill, who has had an impressive start to the club cricket season for Temuka, shone with the bat and ball at Pleasant Point.

He strode to the crease at number seven with South Canterbury 195-5 and went on to score 75, with 52 of those runs coming in boundaries from 10 fours and two sixes.

Other contributi­ons from Will Sharp (59 not out), Liam Beck (61), Josh Smallridge (62) and Matt Brown (66) enabled South Canterbury to declare at 400-9 after 90 overs.

Opening bowler Stan Mair then knocked the top off the North Otago batting lineup to have them struggling at 54 for three and finished the innings with five for 42 while Lill completed his fine all-round match with three for 43 from 13 overs as the visitors were rolled for 278.

Following on, North Otago were 67/3 when stumps were pulled with Mair grabbing another wicket to finish with six for the match.

South Canterbury take on Otago Country at Alexandra next Saturday. Otago Country scored a first innings win over Southland at the weekend.
