May insists the Irish backstop is here to stay
Theresa May put herself on a collision course with Tory Eurosceptics and the DUP yesterday, saying the Northern Ireland backstop will not be removed from the Brexit deal. The British PM, who travels to Brussels tomorrow for talks with Donald Tusk and Jean-Claude Juncker, said she was ‘‘not proposing’’ to drop the backstop, only to make ‘‘changes’’ to it.
