Thirty drifters smoke it up

- Mark Quinlivan

Rain made conditions challenging but West Coaster Daniel Currie was able to overcome those to claim victory in round three of the Drift South series held at Timaru’s Levels Raceway on Saturday.

The two-time defending champion Currie, of Runanga, won the third round of the four round championship, knocking Brogan Mooney, of Christchurch, off his perch.

Mooney won the first two rounds in Christchurch but had to settle for third place behind Currie and Morgan Rooney at Levels. Race organiser Chris Protheroe said Currie had qualified in eighth place but was good enough to win his quarter, semi, and final. ‘‘The weather shook things up a little bit. During qualifying it started raining ... that made it a bit tricky.’’

Currie had been the champion for the past two years, Protheroe said.

‘‘He’s got the best car, and he’s obviously got the experience having won it twice.’’

Protheroe said while Currie beat Mooney in the semifinal, Mooney was still on top of the overall standings.

It was always good to have the championship held in Timaru, Protheroe said.

Drifting is a driving style in which the driver uses the throttle, brakes, clutch, gearshifting and steering input to keep the car in a state of oversteer, while manoeuvring from turn to turn. It’s a judged sport and is about speed, angle and style.
