Relocating chamber changes focus

- Al Williams

South Canterbury’s Chamber of Commerce is on the move.

Chamber chief executive Wendy Smith said their Sophia St, Timaru, site was to undergo earthquake strengthening which had spurred the move to new premises in Canon St.

‘‘Because that building is being earthquake strengthened, and the extent of that work, we needed to move.’’

There were positive spinoffs, she said on Monday as staff completed the shift.

"We have a larger meeting room so more events can be held on site. We have a meeting room for members as well.’’

Smith said the chamber would now focus on a ‘‘more drop-in centre approach’’. ‘‘When people are on the move they can come in, it is larger than our previous site, with a brand new fit out.’’

Smith said the chamber was also in the process of developing a new South Canterbury website.

‘‘We are rebuilding the website with a new platform.

‘‘We are looking to relaunch in July.’’ Smith said the new look website would be easier to navigate.

The new chamber office officially opens for business today, she said.

The South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, a not for profit organisation, was established in 1905 and supports small and large business interests as part of its mission statement.
