The gigs few people want

-

New Zealand jobseekers are eager to call the helpdesk but are not so keen on midwifery or environmental law.

Job advertisement platform Seek has released its list of the positions that attract the most, and fewest, applicants.

The most popular roles were in helpdesk and IT support. Second were tourism jobs with airlines and third were receptionists.

Megan Alexander, general manager of employment agency Robert Half New Zealand, said automation was reducing the number of roles in some areas of administration, such as data entry.

‘‘Employers still need people to administer a lot of this technology, so we are seeing many administration professionals reskilling in order to increase their knowledge and confidence with technology. We expect to see a greater demand for admin specialists with data and tech skills.’’

Unsurprisingly, the job adverts that generated the least interest were those that required specialist skills and lots of training.

The top three least-applied-for roles were for midwives, environment and planning lawyers, and healthcare residents and registrars. Other legal positions made up the top 10 least popular job adverts.

Hobson Health Recruitment director Dan Hobson said specialists such as midwives were always in demand. ‘‘The ratio of qualified midwives to registered nurses is low.’’
