March rev up at Levels Raceway
South Canterbury Car Club president Kevin Pateman hopes for a competitive day at the raceway as the end of racing season fast approaches.
Various rounds of the Open Saloon Car Association, Sports Saloon Cup (SS), 2K Cup South Island, Mazda RX7 and Mini 7 classes are being held today at the Timaru International Motor Raceway – Levels.
Pateman said the weekend signified it was getting toward the end of the season for the raceway.
‘‘There aren’t many race meetings left – this will be the second-last one . . . it’s mostly all the South Island registered classes running.’’
Pateman said most of the championships are also approaching the tail-end of the season.
‘‘They’re classes that are really getting that competitive spirit going amongst them, and it’s always a good time of the season to come out and see some good, close racing.’’
He said there will be several South Canterbury behind the wheel, across the various classes.
‘‘There’s always somebody who knows somebody, and it brings lots of families and supporting crews out.’’
One of the good aspects of Levels for such events was the fact it is user-friendly, Pateman said.
‘‘It’s a park-like atmosphere, it’s nice roundings out there and we run a pretty casual race meeting.’’
The best part from a spectator point of view was being close to the action.
It made for ‘‘extremely good viewing’’, Pateman said.
Pateman said the meeting would bring a ‘‘good dose’’ of people from outside the region.
‘‘It’s all good for the local economy,’’ he said.
Entry to the races is $10 while it’s free for children under-16.
