Armed police patrol at scene of shooting

-

Police have launched a homicide investigation after a man was shot in Ma¯ ngere, Auckland, about 1am yesterday.

While the exact cause of death was yet to be confirmed, it appeared the victim suffered a gunshot wound, Detective Inspector Tofilau Faa Vaaelua said as armed police patrolled the area.

The shooting comes less than a month after a man was shot and another suffered facial injuries at an incident near the Ma¯ ngere Bridge boat ramp. At the time, locals called on authorities to do something decisive about escalating issues in the area.

Police have arrested and charged two men over the February 17 incident.

Meanwhile, three men were arrested following an aggravated robbery which ended in shots being fired at police in Auckland early yesterday. Police were called to New North Rd in Kingsland in central Auckland about 4am following a report of two men entering a bar armed with firearms.

A police spokesperson said the men threatened staff and made off with an amount of money, fleeing in a vehicle which was recovered nearby.

Another car was then pulled over by police. One of the men in the car fired a shot in the direction of police.

The police helicopter followed the vehicle towards the southwestern motorway, where more shots were fired, the spokesperson said. In the Ma¯ ngere area, the men fled on foot.

They were tracked by police dogs and taken into custody. No-one was injured during the aggravated robbery or subsequent gunfire.
