Warriors suspend star for drink-driving

Isaiah Papali’i has been stood down by the Warriors for Saturday’s NRL season-opening game after a drink-driving offence during the off-season.

Ironically, the 20-year-old was one of the faces of a recent Drive Drink Free campaign between the Warriors and Auckland Transport (AT), and recently took part in a driver breath testing operation across Auckland.

The second-rower was one of the players out rewarding sober drivers with free tickets to upcoming matches.

Coach Stephen Kearney confirmed the decision to stand down his young star at a press conference after the team finished their training session at Mt Smart Stadium yesterday.

Warriors chief executive Cameron George said the club was determined to act firmly on indiscretions which contravened standards.

‘‘We expect better from our players and anyone who falls short of our standards will be appropriately dealt with irrespective of the time of year or their standing within the club,’’ George said.

‘‘Isaiah is extremely remorseful for his actions. He feels like he’s let his team-mates, the club, our fans and his family down.’’

An AT spokesperson said: ‘‘AT was informed of this incident earlier today and we are very disappointed, but appreciative that the Warriors have communicated with us and taken action with the young player involved. Our message remains the same – if you are driving, don’t drink.’’
