Injured father and daughter together

- Tina Law

A father and daughter injured in the massacre at Christchurch’s Masjid Al Noor are now together in Auckland.

Wasseim Alsati and his 4-year-old daughter, Alen, were at the Deans

Ave mosque when they were shot just after 1.40pm on Friday.

Fifty people were killed and dozens injured when a gunman opened fire at two city mosques.

Alen is being treated at Starship children’s hospital in Auckland while Alsati, who was shot three times, underwent several surgeries at Christchurch Hospital before being transferred to Auckland Hospital on Sunday night.

A Canterbury District Health Board spokesman said yesterday that Alen was still in a critical condition at Starship and Alsati remained in a serious but stable condition at Auckland Hospital. He had been transferred to be with his wife and daughter, the spokesman said.

Alen and Alsati both underwent surgery on Sunday in different cities.

‘‘She still has a long way to go, bless her,’’ a family friend, Carolyne Phillips, wrote on Facebook on Sunday.

Alsati had surgery on Sunday to repair one of his bullet wounds. He also had surgery on Saturday to get shrapnel and bone out of his hip socket after already having surgery for a perforated bowel and an injury to his pelvis.

Alsati originates from Jordan and works as a barber in Christchurch.
