Good neighbours in a tragedy

- Rachael Comer rachael.comer@stuff.co.nz

South Canterbury residents are rallying behind their northern neighbours following the Christchurch terror attack.

The violent act on Friday, when a gunman walked into two mosques and allegedly killed 50 people, has prompted an outpouring of support from throughout the world, as people learn more about the victims.

A little closer to home, South Canterbury residents have got behind the victims and their families, holding vigils, organising collections and fundraisers.

On Sunday, Makikihi Country Hotel donated to the Christchurch victims’ fund, $5 from every meal sold over the value of $20.

Belinda Coco and her partner, Daniel Lewis, manage the hotel.

Coco said she felt ‘‘hopeless’’ not being able to do anything following the shootings.

‘‘Our hearts broke for everyone affected,’’ Coco said.

‘‘I was talking to some of our staff and we all decided we wanted to do something to help.’’

Coco said the idea to raise money through the sale of meals was a good way to make people feel like they were doing their part. ‘‘We wanted to give it a go and we were surprised how many people came out to support it.

‘‘We had people buying extra items to get them over the $20 mark which was fantastic to see,’’ she said.

So far the hotel has raised $170, she said. ‘‘We have decided to keep the donation box out for a few more days to try and get it off the $200 mark.’’

Messages of hope are also being offered in the form of painted rocks.

Timaru Rocks group spokeswoman Roselyn Fauth said painted rocks could be dropped off at the Timaru Library, South Canterbury Museum or the St John Shop at 5 Butler St, Timaru, to be distributed throughout Christchurch.

‘‘We have had offers flood in from people offering to take them up and distribute.’’

Fauth said there was no prescribed theme.

‘‘We’re just encouraging people to enjoy the therapy of painting rocks, it’s a peaceful way to reflect. Who knows whose hands may find them, and what comfort [they] could give?’’

A vigil was held at Caroline Bay on Sunday afternoon and another was held at Seddon Sq, Waimate, last night. Also in Waimate, a sausage sizzle fundraiser will be held on Thursday at noon outside the Farmlands Real Estate office. All proceeds will go to the cause.
