National backs swift law changes

-

Changes proposed by the Government to reform firearms legislation has been welcomed by National Party leader Simon Bridges.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced an immediate ban on military style, semi-automatic guns and assault rifles yesterday.

During a media stand-up in Auckland, Bridges backed the changes, saying it was ‘‘imperative in the national interest to keep New Zealanders safe’’.

‘‘The attacks on Friday changed New Zealand, the intention of the gun law changes is excellent and I understand the need for urgency.

‘‘I look forward to seeing the law and seeing if a weak select committee is enough,’’ Bridges said.

‘‘We remain committed to ensuring the safety of New Zealanders and fighting extremism in all forms. National will work constructively with the Government to ensure we get this right.’’

Now was a time for unity in New Zealand, Bridges said.

‘‘We support the prime minister and I think most of our rural communities will understand.’’

Announcing the law changes, the prime minister also said there would be immediate action to prevent stock-piling, and a buyback scheme that could cost anywhere between $100 million and $200m.

‘‘On 15 March our history changed forever. Now, our laws will too,’’ Ardern said.
