Carter tipped for World Cup

-

World Cup-winning coach Graham Henry has thrown up a possible shock selection for the All Blacks’ defence of the Webb Ellis Cup.

Henry, who coached the All Blacks to World Cup glory in 2011, has claimed former test star Dan Carter could be a possible option for this year’s World Cup in Japan.

The All Blacks are in need of a first five-eighth following Damian McKenzie suffering a seasonending knee injury.

Outside of incumbents Beauden Barrett and Richie Mo’unga, it’s slim pickings.

Speaking to Newstalk ZB, Henry said Carter could be a possible replacement for McKenzie, who suffered a ruptured ACL in a knee.

‘‘There’s been some talk about Dan Carter and I don’t think Dan Carter will let you down,’’ Henry said. ‘‘I know he played in the final of the Japanese competition and played outstandingly.’’

Henry said younger players such as Brett Cameron were options but Carter’s experience could prove invaluable.

‘‘He could be a possibility too. It’s just obvious they have to qualify and they have to be playing and signed in this country to be available for the All Blacks,’’ Henry said.

As well as his experience, twotime World Cup winner Carter also has extensive knowledge of the Japan scene, having most recently played for Kolebco Steelers.

‘‘He’s been there and done that. He would be number three and I think he fits comfortably in that position. And he’ll add a huge amount of experience and intellectual property about the Rugby World Cup and playing international rugby,’’ Henry said.

‘‘I’m sure he’ll be good for Beaudy [Barrett] and Richie [Mounga] if he was there. And who knows. But it sounds like there’s a lot of work going on behind the scenes.’’

But calling up Carter, who turned 37 last month, seems unlikely given he recently failed a medical to re-join French club Racing 92.

He underwent neck surgery earlier this month and is not due to play for the Kolebco Steelers again until January.

To be eligible for the All Blacks, Carter would need to be signed and playing in New Zealand.

No matter who gets the job of replacing McKenzie, Henry says they will have big shoes to fill.

‘‘It’s a big [loss]. He’s a fabulous little player,’’ Henry said. ‘‘I just love watching him play. He’s such an enthusiast, he just loves playing the game.

‘‘When you love playing the game and you’ve got his sort of skill, and athleticism he’s a really special player.

‘‘So he’s going to be difficult to replace and the search will be on because I think the All Blacks selectors will pick three guys who can play 10.’’
