Hansen adopts another role in front of camera

- Olivia Caldwell

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen is giving acting another crack, this time on Air New Zealand’s latest safety video.

Hansen first got his gruff voice in advertising in the iconic Arnotts ‘‘lose your biscuit’’ advertisement in 2017.

After getting rave reviews and encouragement from his All Blacks team, the coach has been asked by Air NZ to lead the video that advises passengers what to do in case of an emergency.

The official Air NZ video will be revealed on August 1, and will presumably include members of the Rugby World Cup team heading to Japan in September to defend their 2015 and 2011 titles.

In an advance screening released yesterday, Hansen is sitting on an Auckland park bench waiting an Air NZ flight attendant who has with her a ‘‘top secret’’ folder.

The folder has photographs of four All Blacks – captain Kieran Read, midfield back Ryan Crotty, flanker Sam Cane and midfielder Anton Lienert-Brown.

Hansen’s ‘lose your biscuit’ debut had his team in stitches after he was clad in biker boots, faded leathers and astride a motorbike.

Air NZ has opted against that macho image, for a more traditional Hansen look – a warm and woolly winter coat.

The airline received some honest feedback about its embarrassing rap safety video in January, which was pulled after only three months.

It replaced it with the 2016 Summer of Safety video, starring Rachel Hunter, Olympic medallist Eliza McCartney, Joe Naufahu from Game of Thrones and Jayden Daniels from Shortland Street. It was filmed in Northland.

The airline spent $2.5 million on It’s Kiwi Safety, which featured Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Deadpool star Julian Dennison, launching it in November, 2018.

Air New Zealand is a key partner of the All Blacks and New Zealand Rugby.
